題目:The roles of parental psychological symptoms and social support in child behaviors: a representative survey from Taiwan
摘要:
To provide a more comprehensive understanding of the relationship between parental psychological symptoms and child behaviors, this study included additional symptoms commonly reported in community samples – such as hostility, feelings of inferiority, and insomnia – alongside depression and anxiety, to better understand how these symptoms impact child behaviors.
Using probability proportional to size sampling, we recruited participants from a pool of 6,195 parents of children aged 6–12 years to investigate the associations among parental psychological symptoms, social support, and child behaviors. In addition, we compared child behaviors across parents with varying levels of psychological
symptoms (healthy, mild, moderate, and severe). Both parental psychological symptoms and social support were found to predict children’s problem behaviors, even after adjusting for covariates.
Furthermore, our findings revealed differences in the behaviors of children with mentally healthy parents compared to those whose parents exhibited psychological symptoms, including mild ones. Our results underscore the importance of parental psychological symptoms and social support in relation to children’s problem behaviors. Understanding these associations can help mental health practitioners provide better services to parents in need, potentially reducing problem behaviors in children.
